Summary: There is abundant research on the subject that proves
that trade rules and agreements affect women and men differently.
This book offers a series of articles presenting some of these findings
and testimonies about action to address the World Trade Organisation's
(WTO) current gender blindness. For example one chapter by Grace Ongile
outlines a gender aware research agenda for East Africa looking at
the impact of new trade policies in the region. Other chapters are
concerned with the struggles of various organisations lobbying the
WTO and suggest strategies and mechanisms to improve the gender awareness
of the WTO. Targeting the WTO's Trade Policy Review Mechanism is one
point of entry. Impact assessments and evaluations of trade liberalisation
and WTO rules with a focus on women in developing countries should
be conducted and the information made publicly available. In fact
the WTO needs to promote transparency and improved access to information
concerning all their work.
