Short Summary
|
ASMITA is the only feminist alternative media organisation in Nepal, and they function as a pressure group for the advancement of women through media activism. Their objective is to challenge/fill the existing gap in women's participation in and access to the media of women. They monitor the representation of women in the general media and write articles and produce documentaries on women's issues that they then disseminate online or through their publication Asmita Monthly. Through their work, ASMITA has raised public awareness on the gender aspects of issues like trafficking, violence and peacebuilding and this has been reflected in the media, parliamentary discussions, government policies and intellectual debates. ASMITA has also reached many rural women through the production and dissemination of literacy support materials. Their publication Asmita Monthly has succeeded in making gender issues a matter of public debate. Their website provides information on ASMITA's campaigns and programmes and hosts a section called Media Activism which features articles on gender sensitive topics such as conflict, human rights, peace, violence, sexuality, trafficking and politics, often analysing how the media covers such topics, from a gender perspective. Documentaries on rape and conflict and war widows are also available by contacting the organisation. The materials on the website are in English and Nepali.
Their website also hosts two reports on peacebuilding and trafficking. Each one is a collection of articles on different aspects of the relevant topic with recommendations for ways forward:
