Short Summary What is the extent and for what purposes are women's groups in Asia and the Pacific using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)? This research project, carried out by the Asian Women's Resource Exchange (AWORC), revealed that the impact of ICTs on women's NGOs in the Region has been mixed. The study is based on the results of an electronic survey distributed to women's groups in eight countries in the Caucasus and Central Asia, eight countries in the Pacific Islands and seven countries in Asia. It found that using ICTs enabled women's groups in the region to gain more visibility, better access to donor assistance and to information about international women's events. E-mail was found to be the most used ICT feature by women's groups, as echoed by earlier studies. At the same time, findings showed a clear urban bias in use of and access to ICTs by women's groups. These groups, particularly in rural areas, were found to be slow in using the full range of services offered through e-mail and the Internet. Recommendations include conducting targeted ICT skills training and ensuring that gender is mainstreamed in ICT policies and programmes.
