Title Social and Cultural Factors which Facilitate the Transmission of HIV in Bolivia (Spanish)
Author Quiroga, G.V.R.
Publication Date June 2002
Short Summary If we are going to attack the causes and not just the effects of HIV/AIDS we need to look at the cultural and social aspects, as well as the medical. Cultural values and social norms which facilitate transmission in Bolivia include taboos around talking about sexuality, which is reinforced by religious associations of sex with sin and of women as virginal. The machismo in Bolivia is also a problem. Men are pressured to act hard and strong, not to talk about emotions, take risks, and have many sexual partners. Women are pressured into a 'Virgin Mary' stereotype of being quiet, submissive and forbearing. These roles increase risk of both violence and HIV transmission. Risk is also increased by: alcohol consumption associated with sexual activity; perceptions of condoms; poverty; an inadequate health system; and a culture of discrimination against people with ill-health. Teachers are in a good position to challenge norms and values which facilitate HIV transmission. Teachers need to promote research, teaching and information on healthy sexuality and HIV/AIDS. Everyone has the right to live out a healthy and pleasurable sexuality free of social pressures and violence.
