Short Summary This manual - a product of Pact Tanzania's Tanzania Advocacy Partnership Program (TAPP) - outlines a 'gender mentoring' process designed to support people to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to raise awareness of gender issues and inequalities within organisations and institutions. The first section -'What is gender equality?' - provides definitions of concepts such as sex and gender, equity and equality and empowerment, illustrating these with personal stories and examples. Section two focuses on gender awareness training/mentoring programmes, outlining steps for effective gender mainstreaming, which include:

•Secure leadership commitment, for example by giving a one-day orientation to board members and senior management to clarify gender concepts
•Conduct a gender audit to establish how gender-sensitive an organisation currently is (for example looking at whether an organisation has active policies to promote gender equality and respect for diversity)
•Develop gender policies to guide the planning implementation and resource allocation of the organisation's programmes and projects in a gender sensitive manner
•Carry out a gender analysis - three different gender analysis models are outlined in the manual
•Develop gender sensitive indicators, for example having certain percentage goals relating to gender parity in staffing
•Identify obstacles and constraints, such as gender not being seen as a priority by staff and management.
