Short Summary
|
The Girl Power Initiative (GPI) in Nigeria takes girls through a three year sexuality education programme aimed at promoting their personal empowerment, sexual health and leadership skills. This paper incorporates the voices of GPI girls, GPI graduates, their parents and community members to demonstrate the impact of sex education on girls in Nigeria. Six months into the programme girls generally speak louder, volunteer to do tasks and question previously accepted assumptions. By the end of their training they speak out not only for themselves but for others, and provoke real change in their communities. The GPI experience shows that asserting one's right to decision making over the personal is the first step towards having the voice to participate in decision making in the public and political spheres.
