Short Summary |
The militarisation of Sudanese society, caused
by almost half a century of internal conflict, has had a devastating
impact on women. The conflict has increased women's economic, social
and communal burdens, while at the same time undermining the protective
safety nets and structures in which they have traditionally operated.
The civil war has also restricted women's ability to freely associate
and to mobilise within Sudanese civil society, particularly in terms
of being able to do so in ways which are not in direct support of
the Sudanese government or specific movements. This report assesses
the current situation of women, identifies key challenges and proposes
priorities for action to achieve gender equality in Northern Sudan.
It is an outcome of consultations between the United Nation's (UN)
Joint Assessment Mission's (JAM) gender expert for the North Sudan,
as well as women's organisations, gender experts and various cluster
teams in the North. The report is divided into eight sections: economic
policy; the productive sector; basic social services; education; health;
water; infrastructure; governance; livelihoods; capacity building
and institutional development; and gender-disaggregated information
and statistics. It also contains an action results matrix for achieving
gender equality and eradicating poverty in Northern Sudan. Please
