Short Summary
|
The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), with support from the Canadian International Development Association (CIDA) and other organisations, advocated for the establishment of a 'Gender Technical Committee' (GTC) to promote a more gender responsive HIV/AIDS response in Nigeria. The GTC has been approved by the National Action Committee on AIDS. It has successfully advocated for the involvement of gender expertise throughout the process of review and implementation of the national strategy on HIV/AIDS, and for institutionalising the committee's involvement in these processes. Several lessons were learnt from this experience. Persistence and focus are key to the success of advocacy - UNIFEM and CIDA remained focussed in their demand for the establishment of a GTC. A variety of advocacy methods need to be used - both formal and informal taking place at various levels. Advocacy can be successful when backed by both human and financial resources. Effective advocacy requires broad based partnership. The result has been a more gender sensitive national response to HIV/AIDS (summary adapted from the presentation).
