Short Summary
|
Understandings of patriarchal violence usually focus on male violence against women. However, this paper links patriarchy and the violence and oppression directed towards lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) persons. Patriarchy is based on perceptions of male supremacy and within this power structure the norm of the heterosexual male is dominant. Associated with this are gender stereotypes which govern how men and women are expected to behave and be with each other. Those that that deviate from these 'normal' codes of behaviour, such as LGBT persons, are regarded as deviants and subject to oppression. Many regulatory frameworks are now in place to tackle different forms of patriarchal violence in Sweden and internationally, but the incidence of patriarchal violence everywhere continues to rise. Measures tend to focus on more extreme forms of violence such as female genital mutilation, trafficking for sexual purposes, and crimes in the name of honour. Whilst the taboo on debating discrimination against LGBT persons has begun to weaken, less attention is being paid to the question of how perceptions of female subordination also generate less extreme forms of violence and oppression directed at women.
