Short Summary |
In July 2003, the Japan NGO Network for CEDAW
(JNCC), made up of 19 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), submitted
a series of reports to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination
of Discrimination against Women. These documents were written following
the submission of the Japanese government's 5th periodic report to
the Committee in 2002. The Summary Report brings together a synopsis
of each of the NGO documents and outlines their recommendations. Although
the issues are wide-ranging, key areas of concern include the need:
- To combat discrimination in employment particularly relating to
wage disparities.
- To collect data and report on the situation of minority women.
- To attain justice for women forced to provide sexual services to
Japanese soldiers.
- To address the continued use and perpetration of gender stereotypes
at the official level. |
