Short Summary
|
Sexual harassment and gender-related harassment are difficult to quantify. The terms are interpreted in different ways, and assessments of offensive behaviour involve subjective experience. This review of the current status of sexual harassment and gender-related harassment in working life in Sweden has been produced as part of a project undertaken by the Office of the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman. The report shows that there is a significant gap between the number of actual complaints received concerning sexual harassment and the reported incidence of such harassment in various studies. Findings from previous and current research on sexual harassment in different work environments are also explored, which show why victims tend not to report it more than they do. In a study on sexual harassment in academia, for instance, postgraduate students used a variety of strategies to reinterpret and invalidate the sexual harassment they had been subject too. The website (http://www.jamombud.se/en/) also hosts a number of official documents, including the Equal Opportunities Act, the Equal Treatment of Students at Universities Act and the Pay Equity Guide. Most documents are in Swedish, but some have been translated into English.
