Short Summary |
Women are increasingly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.
Nearly 50 percent of the 38 million people living with HIV/AIDS are
female, up from 41 percent in 1997. Young women are disproportionately
at risk. In the United States girls account for 57 percent of new
HIV infections among teenagers. The biggest risk for many women and
girls is marriage - more than four-fifths of new infections in women
result from sex with their husband or primary partner. In turn, sexual
coercion and violence lead to a greater chance of infection. Women
in South Africa who are in a relationship with violent or domineering
men are 50 percent more likely to contract HIV than women not involved
in abusive relationships. A real problem is that women and girls do
not have access to comprehensive information and services on HIV/AIDS.
In Bangladesh less than 20 percent of married women have heard of
AIDS. These are selected facts from one of a series of health fact
sheets from the International Women's Health Coalition. |
