Short Summary |
The advocacy position paper is an outcome of
a meeting of the members of the International Gender and Trade Network
(IGTN) from the seven regions of Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Latin America,
North America and the Pacific. The purpose of the meeting, and it's
outcome - the position paper - was to set out IGTN's stand on the
World Trade Organization, before its fourth Ministerial Meeting in
Doha, Qatar, November 2001. According to IGTN, the scope of the WTO
should be reduced to trade issues, ensuring food security from the
household to the national levels, and restoring the power of governments
to regulate their monetary and financial systems. After outlining
their damaging effects on food security and local agriculture IGTN
also calls for the removal of Trade-related Intellectual Property
Rights (TRIPS). The Network also calls for the removal of the Trade-related
Investment Measures (TRIMS), since they undermine governments' ability
to regulate foreign investment and to empower local investors. For
