Short Summary |
The allegations of widespread sexual exploitation
and abuse of refugee and internally displaced women and children by
humanitarian workers and peacekeepers in West Africa have highlighted
the vulnerability of refugees, internally displaced persons and others,
especially women and girls. In March 2002, the Inter-Agency Standing
Committee (IASC) established a Task Force on Protection from Sexual
Exploitation and Abuse in Humanitarian Crises mandated to strengthen
and enhance the protection and care of women and children in situations
of humanitarian crisis and conflict. The plan of action for the task
force includes: incorporating adherence to a code of conduct, as outlined
by the IASC Task Force, into new and existing employment contracts,
job descriptions, terms of reference and performance appraisal systems;
and developing and implementing a strategy for the dissemination of
materials and training activities on the code of conduct for all current
and future staff, including local and international staff, at all
levels. |
