Short Summary |
This alternative report maps the actions, legislation
and programmes of the European Union (EU) undertaken to implement
the 12 areas of concern of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA)
since 1995. The report highlights that some real progress has been
made in the EU, notably that the position of women in decision-making
positions has improved and there is a growing awareness of violence
against women. Yet other developments have also slowed down progress
towards gender equality in the last decade. These include the negative
influence of very conservative forces and religious fundamentalism,
in particular in relation to women's sexual and reproductive rights.
They also include the adoption of macro economic policies focusing
on market liberalisation, privatisation and competition which have
led to an increase in the gender segregation of labour; less job security;
increases in the gender pay gap; reductions in women's access to health
and education (due to privatisation of state services), and greater
feminisation of poverty. In view of these developments, the report
calls for strengthening and reforming European social protection,
pensions and tax systems so that they respond more adequately both
to existing gender inequality as well as to women's needs. |
