Short Summary |
Can a gender and development approach improve
women's situation in Haiti and bring about a better society? The author
explains why a gender and development approach is essential, and argues
that the women's movement must apply that approach to projects tackling
microcredit, training and women's rights. Women's organisations also
must create alliances with social movements, Non-Government Organisations
(NGOs), popular movements and feminist organisations to build development
strategies that produce real changes towards a new society. Facts
and figures on Haitian women are used to prove that as women are the
pillar of society, a gender and development approach is critical to
achieve a better society. Other figures featured include those showing
how women are very active workers both in the rural and urban areas
and in the formal and informal sector. However because of a high illiteracy
rate, they are often badly paid and discriminated against in the formal
sector, an issue that needs particular attention. The author puts
forward some suggestions for the women's movement in Haiti that could
be taken as strategies to improve the status of women. They include
promoting a gender approach, and supporting the application of practice
ensuring gender equality. French title: Domestiquer le Genre en Haiti.
