Short Summary |
What efforts have been made by the United Nations
(UN) system to support the implementation of the Beijing Platform
for Action (BPfA) at the national level? This review, based on inputs
from UN entities, concludes that these entities have made substantial
progress in their efforts to support implementation. Most entities
have developed gender policies and strategies and made institutional
arrangements to facilitate implementation. Gender specialist resources,
although limited in number and capacity, are in place in most entities
of the UN system to promote and support implementation. Staff awareness
raising has been carried out in the majority of organisations. Tools
and methodologies have been developed and put into use. Despite these
achievements, challenges remain in the implementation, including insufficient
awareness and capacity of staff, underdeveloped monitoring and evaluation
activities, poor accountability, lack of data disaggregated by sex
and inadequate resource allocation. Recommendations for the consideration
of the Commission on the Status of Women include increase management
commitment and establish mechanisms that hold staff and senior management
accountable for results including in the performance appraisal system;
and ensure sufficient attention to gender equality perspectives in
the planning and allocation of financial resources.
