Short Summary |
Much has been written on the impact of globalisation
on poor women. It is generally agreed that the impact can be both
negative and positive and varies according to context. While recognising
the negative effects, this book explores how globalisation, particularly
trade liberalisation, can open up new economic opportunities, and
that low-income women can take advantage of these if enabled to do
so. This book features six case studies from the Commonwealth countries
which explore what strategies have linked women producers with global
markets or created jobs for women in export markets. Examples are
given of fair trade (Ghana), traditional business development services/niche
market (Samoa), small enterprise development/social entrepreneurship
(Mozambique), ethical trade/labour legislation (South Africa), female
led industrialisation (Bangladesh), and technology driven globalisation
(India).
