Short Summary |
Do women's literacy programmes have a significant
impact on women's social and economic development? This study looks
at two literacy programmes in Nepal: the Basic Primary Education Program
(BPEP) and the Health Education and Adult Literacy Program (HEAL).
It is aimed at policy-makers (national and donor) and practitioners
to enable better programme planning. Findings covered participation
rates, changes in literacy skills, health knowledge, participation
in income-earning activities, political and community participation,
children's education and overall social and economic development.
The study found that participation in one of the literacy programmes
did contribute to women's social and economic development taking into
account women's household status, age and time factors. It concluded
that a relatively small investment could lead to large gains in social
and economic development. Implications for policy included the need
to help women to become more involved in their children's education;
the potential for participants in BPEP and HEAL to become more involved
in formal schools through multi-generational programmes; and the need
for increased emphasis on income-earning activities to work towards
women's greater economic empowerment. |
