Short Summary |
At least one out of every three women has been
beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime according
to a study based on 50 surveys from around the world. Usually, the
abuser is a member of her own family or someone known to her. In fact,
the World Health Organization reports that up to 70 percent of female
murder victims are killed by their male partners. These are just a
few of the global statistics from this fact sheet produced by the
Amnesty International “Stop Violence Against Women campaign”. It also
explores the reality of domestic, rape and sexual violence in the
United Kingdom. For example, one in four women will be a victim of
domestic violence in their lifetime. One in 20 women in England and
Wales has been the victim of rape -'strangers' are only responsible
for 8 percent of rapes.
