| Short Summary
|
Macro-economic and political factors that exacerbate
gender inequalities lie at the core of the epidemic and directly influence
the epidemic's rapid spread. HIV is currently infecting women at faster
rates than men in key regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa. Women need
to have control over matters related to their sexual and reproductive
health, greater access to economic opportunities and resources so
they need not resort to exploitative occupations, and men need to
assume more responsibility for preventing HIV transmission. This training
manual includes both a one-day and a two-day training module, aimed
at raising awareness of the gender dimensions of HIV/AIDS. The structure,
agenda and methodology of the sessions, training aids and notes for
the facilitator are provided. Feedback from participants who have
taken the training sessions in different countries around the world
showed that they generally no longer viewed HIV/AIDS as gender- neutral.
They also recognised that it was an important social issue and not
just a health concern. Participants and facilitators also identified
possible improvements such as the need to get men more involved. The
manual is also available in French and Spanish. |
