Short Summary Advocating for gender mainstreaming (i.e. applying a gender equality approach systematically both at institutional and project levels) is quite different from putting the principle into practice. This paper analyses the mainstreaming process undertaken by CRUDAN in partnership with The Centre for International Development and Training (CIDT), UK. This 3 year project was designed to help CRUDAN equip non-governmental and community-based organisations in Nigeria with the skills to promote gender equity and awareness in their work. At the outset of the partnership, CRUDAN itself was male-dominated, with women in administration or support roles. Sexist innuendo was common; staff worked long hours and often away from home. It was claimed that the nature of their work was not conducive to recruiting female facilitators. The plan to mainstream gender included a Generic Training Programme, working through the Church to raise gender awareness, and influencing change at community level. Such plan was reviewed after a six- month interval. Two action plans were implemented. The first focussed on encouraging women's participation in group work and plenary sessions, getting facilitators to use non-sexist language and gender-aware case studies and challenging overtly sexist comments and attitudes among the participants. Plan two included recruiting more female facilitators, achieving a gender balance in the Board and Trustees, integrating a gender perspective into the 5 year strategic review process, introducing gender-disaggregated statistics relating to membership and staffing, using gender-sensitive mechanisms to evaluate all training courses and ensuring family-friendly conditions of service.
