Short Summary
|
This selection of video interviews contains experiences and testimonials on the role of the media and ICTs in promoting gender equality, with a specific focus on Section J of the Beijing Platform for Action, concerning women and the media. A number of opinions are available including one interview with Carolyn M Byerly from Howard University, Washington DC, who talks about the need to engage national policy makers as part of our media activism. She argues that we must encourage women to get more involved in regulation and policy surrounding the media. Another interview with Chandrika Sepali Kottegoda, co-director of the Women and Media Collective based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, talks about the lack of access by NGOs which makes it difficult to see the J spot in the actual government review at the CSW. She highlights that countries are reporting back and arguing they are achieving much. However they are not talking about the restrictions that are placed on the media. One other interview with Sharon Bhagwan Rolls from FemLink Pacific considers how section J hasn't been in various regional plans of action until recently. She argues that section J was so progressive back when it was written and now women need to reclaim it. The women's movement must work with media activist, they must not think of the media as only useful for public relations, but as real partners in communicating women's rights issues.
