Author Johnston, N.
Publication Date June 2003

Volume Gender an Peacebuilding Programme
Short Summary The perspectives of South Asian women on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1325 are the focus of this regional consultation launched by the Gender and Peacebuilding Programme of International Alert. This programme was established to recognise the diversity of women's experiences during war and conflict, and support their potential to contribute to peacebuilding and reconstruction. It evolved out of the global campaign Women Building Peace: From the Village Council to the Negotiating Table, launched by International Alert with support from over 200 partners in May 1999. Using UNSC Resolution 1325 as a framework, the programme has so far completed consultations on women's peace and security in Nepal, Nigeria and the Caucasus, aimed at promoting more gender aware policies rooted in local realities. This report features the work of the latest regional consultations, which took place in the South Asia region. Participants stressed the need to move away from the use of language in international law that reinforces stereotypes; to improve accountability to laws and commitments both within and outside the UN, particularly Resolution 1325; and to establish more effective reporting mechanisms that would strengthen more locally/regionally appropriate gender-sensitive interventions.
