AuthorNGO Committee on the Status of Women
Publication DateFebruary 2010
Summary2010 marks the 15th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) Fourth World Conference on Women where the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) was adopted by 189 countries. In recognition of this anniversary, the NGO Committee on the Status of Women is organizing a Global Women's Forum to consider implementation of the BPfA. This website provides links to a number of relevant documents and hosts a moderated online discussion on the Critical Areas of Concern of the Beijing Platform for Action. Notes are available from two years of forum planning meetings for the review. A number of shadow reports submitted by non-governmental organisations (NGO) are available for download. One example is the shadow report from Widows for Peace and Democracy. Their report stresses that widows and widowhood are not mentioned anywhere either in the Beijing Platform for Action, or in the Outcome Document of Beijing + 5. The report calls on the review to cease regarding women as an homogenous “whole” but to acknowledge that women are highly diverse and that there are certain categories of women - such as widows - that merit a special focus because they bear specific disadvantages which must be remedied for the good of all society. Other shadow reports cover women's issues in the Arab world, in Africa and Nepal. Links to other documents are provided including press releases, a presentation on statelessness and workshop summaries.
