| Short Summary | | Title | Gender Equality, HIV and AIDS: Challenges for the Education Sector | | Author | Aikman, S., Unterhalter, E. and Boler, T. | | Publication Date | September 2008 | | Publisher | Oxfam GB | | Summary | How can schools help transform unequal gender relations in order to protect young people against HIV and AIDS? How can schools contribute to caring for those who are infected and affected by the virus? This book tackles these questions, examining the challenges of working for gender equality in the education sector in contexts of HIV and AIDS. It draws on research and experience from different levels and parts of the education system, bringing together writers from diverse disciplinary and methodological backgrounds, experiences and practices. Their work ranges from small-scale qualitative studies of the gendered lives of students and teachers in the context of HIV and AIDS, to discussions of the literature in the field, and analysis of the policies of international agencies, national and local governments, and non-governmental organisations. The book is divided into two sections. The first outlines the ways in which gender inequalities in schools and in the social relations that surround school have exacerbated the epidemic. The chapters cover a range of issues, including research on violence against girls and boys in schools, and a study of orphans in South Africa which draws out gender differences in terms of educational outcomes for orphaned boys and girls. The second section presents initiatives that have attempted to change the marked gender inequalities in schooling that either exacerbate or fail to reduce the effects of the epidemic. These include chapters on the opportunities that the school itself provides for proactively engaging with the epidemic, as well as chapters on adult education and the non-formal education sector.
