SummaryThe United States Agency for International Development (USAID) - funded Safe Schools Programme (Safe Schools) is working in Malawi and Ghana to create safe environments for all girls and boys. By promoting gender-equitable relationships and reducing School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV), Safe Schools also aims to improve educational outcomes and reduce negative health outcomes. Gendered norms for roles and relationships open the way for SRGBV. It can be perpetrated by teachers, pupils, or community members. Both girls and boys can be victims as well as perpetrators. Both educational and reproductive health outcomes are negatively affected by such violence. This resource contains the materials, tools and instruments used, including sampling methodologies, student and teacher close-ended interview guides, school background information interview guides, and preliminary data analysis techniques used in the Safe Schools Programme. These materials provide a practical tool for assessing the knowledge, attitudes, practices, as well as the experiences of boys, girls and teachers of gender-based physical, psychological and sexual violence in and around schools.
