The Millennium Declaration, in its recognition of the central importance of gender equality, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) provide a new vehicle for CEDAW and Beijing implementation. Indeed CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) can be used to understand and address the gender equality dimensions of the MDGs, which in turn can help to ensure that the pursuit of the MDGs results in effective development. This report offers three ways to enhance the synergy between CEDAW, the Beijing Platform for Action, and the MDGs: the identification of connecting points between the three processes, including connections relating to monitoring and reporting; the highlighting of some of the most critical gender equality concerns for each MDG and identifying the specific measures governments are already obligated and committed to take in these areas (under CEDAW and the BPfA). It also provides links to gender equality resources useful for engaging in this work.
