SummaryWomen's rights and freedoms should be the same as men's, however all their rights and freedoms can be -and often are-denied, violated or limited. The Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was created as a powerful tool for promoting equal rights between women and men, through recognising and addressing gender discrimination and securing national government's commitments to equality. This handbook on the CEDAW aims to familiarise international development co-operation personnel with the human rights obligations of individual states with regard to women. It is divided into three parts: Part I attempts to answer the question: Why is there a separate women's convention? Part II provides commentary and further clarification of each CEDAW article, while Part III consists of one-page profiles on implementation of international human rights treaties by all of SIDA's partner countries (50 profiles).
