II. Special Feature: French Translation of BRIDGE's Cutting Edge Pack on Gender and Indicators
===============================

What does a world without gender inequality look like? Realising this vision requires inspiring and mobilising social change. But what would indicate we are on the right track - and how will we know when we get there? Gender-sensitive indicators and other measurements of change are critical - for building the case for taking gender (in)equality seriously, for enabling better planning and actions, and for holding institutions accountable for their commitments on gender.

Now translated into French, this Cutting Edge Pack hopes to inspire thinking on this question - with an Overview Report outlining key issues on gender and indicators, a Supporting Resources Collection providing summaries of key texts, tools, case studies and contacts of organisations in this field, and a Gender and Development In Brief newsletter with three short articles on the theme. Thanks to the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) who have funded the printing and dissemination of this translation.

III. Quick Guide: Gender and Aging
===============================

The gender dimensions of aging are often overlooked. How should efforts to support older people address inequalities between men and women? The following resources are a selection from over 20 resources added to the Siyanda database on gender and aging.

- Living Situation of Widowed Old Women - In-depth Interview and Analysis (in Chinese), Tsinghua University Gerontology Center, and China Research Center on Ageing, June 2007
This study visited 12 widowed old women and 6 widowed middle age women living in Beijing to enquire about their living situation.
http://www.siyanda.org/static/pei_widowed_women.htm?em=0711&tag=QG

- Gender and Poverty: Determinants of Health in Ageing (in Spanish), Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública, Mexico, R., May 2007
This article analyses the relationships between gender, ageing and poverty in Mexico and makes recommendations for policy-makers.
http://www.siyanda.org/static/salgado_wong_health.htm?em=0711&tag=QG

- African Women and Ageing: Nairobi, Beijing, and the Implications for African Gender Scholarship, The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), January 2006
Are older women given sufficient attention in the Nairobi declaration and the Beijing Platform for Action? This article argues that, although these declarations mention older women, identifying them as a 'vulnerable group' needing special attention, they fail to adequately recognise the important social roles they play and the gender inequalities they face
http://www.siyanda.org/static/Codesria_african_ageing.htm?em=0711&tag=QG

- The Gender Implications of Pension Reforms. General Remarks and Evidence from Selected Countries, United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), January 2006
Globally, women make up the majority of older people, as well as the majority of the elderly living in poverty. Despite these facts, and despite international and national commitments to gender mainstreaming in all policy fields, concerns about gender equality have been largely absent from mainstream pension policy debates.

- Women2000: Gender Dimensions of Ageing (in English, Spanish and French), United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (UNDAW), March 2002
What inequalities do older women face as a result of their gender-based roles in society? What measures can be taken to strengthen their positive contribution to the family and community?
http://www.siyanda.org/static/undaw_women2000.htm?em=0711&tag=QG

- Gender, Poverty, and Intergenerational Vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, Oxfam, January 2002
Older women and young girls in developing countries are groups that are very likely to be affected by HIV/AIDS, but who tend to fall outside the boundaries of mainstream development research and practice on HIV/AIDS. This article explores the reasons for the lack of attention to these groups and identifies what steps are needed to ensure their needs are also met

- Gender and Transport for Older People, HelpAge International, January 2002
Consultations with poor older people in developing countries have shown that transport is a major concern for older people. Problems with transport create a real barrier to older women and men accessing basic social services and participating in local activities.
