Reassessing Gender Training Workshop-Egypt
The Institute for Gender and Women's Studies at the American University in Cairo will host the second workshop in its Reassessing Gender Training Series: Women's Rights and Citizenship in Egypt
This workshop centers on a discussion of legal and other rights as constructed
by states, activists, and academics in Egypt. The domain of rights is one that
is shaped by official, radical, secular/feminist and Islamic discourses and
is an arena where national and international players are engaged. The workshop
will attempt to provide a forum for the consideration and appreciation of these
varying visions and how they structure the present and future of women in society,
as well as research on their roles as citizens. The workshop will also question
the meaning of modernization, national identity and globalization as projected
by on the ground efforts to realize different rights for different women. Participants
will be invited to give formal written presentations in English on the issue.
Abstracts in English by August 30, 2002 (250 words). Written interventions are
expected by October 10th 2002. These will be distributed to all participants
prior to the workshop. For more information regarding the workshop write to
Dr. Hania Sholkamy: hanias@aucegypt.edu. Abstracts and papers should be submitted
